Best Rucking Apps in 2026 (Compared)

The best rucking app is one that lets you enter your pack weight and then actually uses it, in your calories, your effort, and your progress. By that test, the 2026 field splits in two: dedicated rucking apps like Ruckaroo, RuckIt, and MARCH, which treat load as a core input, and general fitness tools like Apple's Workout app, Strava, and Garmin, which track the walk beautifully but treat the weight as an afterthought or ignore it. Garmin's newer watches sit in between, with a built-in Rucking activity that logs pack weight.

A clear disclosure before we go further: Ruckaroo is our app. We've tried to be fair anyway. Every competitor fact below comes from that company's own website, support pages, or App Store listing as we found them in November 2026. Where we couldn't verify something, we say so instead of guessing. Prices and features change, so check the listing before you subscribe.

What Makes a Good Rucking App?

Rucking is walking with weight, and the weight changes everything. Load-carriage research, including the U.S. Army's Pandolf equation, shows energy cost rising with the load you carry, your speed, the grade, and the surface underfoot. An app that only knows your body weight will undercount a heavy ruck by a wide margin; our breakdown of how many calories rucking burns shows how wide. So we judged each app on five things:

Best Rucking Apps Compared

App Platforms Pack weight Load-aware calories Cost
Ruckaroo (ours) iPhone, Apple Watch, Android, Wear OS, Garmin (Connect IQ) Yes, core input Yes: Pandolf model + heart rate, terrain, hills Paid subscription
RuckIt iPhone, Apple Watch Yes, with saved loadouts Yes, per its listing 7-day trial, then $4.99/mo or $34.99/yr
MARCH iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch Yes "Weight-adjusted," method not stated Free download; Pro $4.99/mo or $39.99/yr
Garmin Rucking activity Select Garmin watches Yes Not documented by Garmin Included on compatible watches
Apple Workout app Apple Watch No No Included
Strava iPhone, Apple Watch, and more No No (shows partner calories if sent) Free tier; paid subscription

1. Ruckaroo: Best for Load-Aware Tracking on Any Watch

Yes, we're putting ourselves first, so judge this section with that in mind. Ruckaroo was built around one idea: the weight on your back should drive every number. Your load, distance, pace, and terrain go into a Ruck Score, a 0-100 measure of total effort built on the U.S. Army's load-carriage research. Calories use the Pandolf equation blended with your heart rate, with published resistance factors for paved, trail, gravel, and sand, load-adjusted costs for uphill and downhill, and temperature and humidity adjustments.

Among the dedicated rucking apps here, it's the only one we found with apps for all three major watch platforms: Apple Watch, Wear OS, and Garmin through Connect IQ. Treadmill rucks count too. Beyond tracking, there's an AI coach that answers training, nutrition, recovery, and gear questions using your actual rucks, a photo journal that writes captions for your walks, badges and levels from Small to Siege, monthly challenges, and Mobs, virtual rucking clubs with shared challenges and custom patches. If you use Strava, you can send a ruck there.

Watch out for: it's a paid subscription, and there are more features than a minimalist needs. If you just want a stopwatch with a map, you'll be paying for things you don't use.

2. RuckIt: A Focused iPhone and Apple Watch Tracker

RuckIt, from GO Longevity Labs, is an iPhone and Apple Watch app for walking and hiking with added weight. Its App Store listing describes load-aware calorie tracking that uses your body weight, added load, age, sex, resting metabolic rate, pace, and distance, plus saved loadouts for different vests and packs, GPS maps with elevation and heart rate, heart rate zones, Apple Health sync, custom goals, streaks, badges, and a patches gallery. It requires iOS 17 and watchOS 10 or later.

Watch out for: we found only an App Store listing, no Android version, and the listing had very few ratings when we checked, with some reviews describing recording bugs the developer said it was fixing. Pricing per the listing is a 7-day free trial, then $4.99 a month or $34.99 a year (the listing's in-app purchase list showed the annual plan at $35.99, so expect about $35).

3. MARCH: Best for Club Organizers on iPhone

MARCH: Ruck Club & Tracker leans hard into clubs. Its listing describes clubs with member roles, digital waivers, scheduled events with RSVPs, leaderboards, and a feed, alongside GPS tracking with pace, distance, elevation, and heart rate. It advertises "weight-adjusted calorie burn," more than 10 structured training programs, AI-generated plans, weekly challenges, and imports from other watches through Apple Health.

Watch out for: it's Apple-only, requires a very recent iOS (26.0) and watchOS 11.5, and doesn't explain how it adjusts calories for load. Pro costs $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year after a 7-day trial, per the listing.

4. Garmin's Built-In Rucking Activity: Best If You Already Own a Recent Garmin

Garmin added a Rucking activity in its May 2025 feature update. You enter your pack weight before the ruck, and Garmin's blog names its latest tactix, Instinct, Enduro, and fēnix watches as compatible. It's included with the watch, records the usual GPS, pace, heart rate, and elevation, and turns off VO2 max recording when you carry 2 kilograms or more so your estimate isn't skewed.

Watch out for: Garmin doesn't document how pack weight changes your calorie estimate, and older or lower-end models may not have the profile at all. We cover the details in Garmin rucking mode: what it tracks (and what it doesn't).

5. Apple Workout App: Fine for Occasional Rucks

Apple's Workout app has no rucking type. Its list of workout types includes Hiking, Walking, and Other, and none has a carried-weight setting. Hiking or Outdoor Walk gives you a solid GPS route and heart rate trace for free. Apple calculates calories from your height, weight, sex, and age plus heart rate and motion, so your pack isn't part of the math.

Watch out for: treat the calorie number as a walking estimate, not a ruck estimate. Our guide to tracking rucking on Apple Watch walks through which workout to pick.

6. Strava: Best for the Social Feed, Not the Load

Strava's supported sport types include Walk and Hike, but no rucking type, and its support pages don't mention a load setting for any sport. Strava's calorie help article notes that when an upload partner sends a calorie value, Strava displays that value; otherwise it uses its own estimate. That's why many ruckers record in a rucking app and send the finished ruck to Strava for the kudos. The app is free to download with a paid subscription for premium features.

Watch out for: if you record a ruck directly in Strava, your pack weight isn't part of anything it calculates.

7. GORUCK: Great Gear, No Current Tracker We Could Find

GORUCK is the biggest brand in rucking, so people naturally search for a GORUCK app. GORUCK offers a free rucking calorie calculator on its website, which it describes as an estimate, and its Tribe 'n Training subscription includes daily workouts through a GORUCK Training app. When we checked the US App Store in November 2026, we couldn't find a current GORUCK tracking app listing. If you train with GORUCK programming, you'll still want a separate app to record the rucks themselves.

Ruckaroo vs RuckIt

These two get compared often because they're the closest in spirit: both are rucking-first, both take pack weight as a real input, and both run on Apple Watch. There isn't much written about RuckIt beyond its App Store listing, so here's a straight side-by-side from what each company publishes:

Ruckaroo RuckIt
Platforms iPhone, Apple Watch, Android, Wear OS, Garmin iPhone, Apple Watch
Calorie model Pandolf equation + heart rate blend Body weight, load, age, sex, RMR, pace, distance
Terrain types Paved, trail, gravel, sand Not mentioned in listing
Effort score Ruck Score, 0-100 Not mentioned in listing
Progress and motivation Badges and levels, monthly challenges Charts, streaks, badges, patches
Community Mobs (virtual clubs), challenges Not mentioned in listing
Coaching AI coach using your ruck history Custom distance, time, or pace goals
Price Paid subscription (see App Store) 7-day trial, then $4.99/mo or $34.99/yr

The honest take: if you're on iPhone, want a simple load-aware tracker, and don't care about terrain modeling, clubs, or coaching, RuckIt covers the basics. If you're on Android, wear a Garmin or Wear OS watch, ruck on mixed surfaces, or want one effort score and a community to keep you consistent, Ruckaroo is built for that.

How to Choose

Whatever you choose, the fundamentals matter more than the app: a well-fitted pack, a load you can carry with good posture, and showing up three times a week. If you're just getting started, our beginner's guide to rucking covers all of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best app for rucking?

The best rucking app is one that takes your pack weight as an input and uses it in your calories and effort. Ruckaroo (which we make), RuckIt, and MARCH all do this. Ruckaroo is the only one of the three we found that also runs on Android, Wear OS, and Garmin.

Is there a free rucking app?

Apple's Workout app, Strava's free tier, and Garmin's built-in Rucking activity cost nothing extra, but Apple and Strava don't account for pack weight, and Garmin doesn't document how it uses it. Most dedicated rucking apps, including ours, use a paid subscription.

Does GORUCK have a rucking app?

GORUCK offers a free calorie calculator on its website and includes a GORUCK Training app with its Tribe 'n Training subscription for workouts. We couldn't find a current GORUCK tracking app on the US App Store in November 2026.

Can Strava track rucking?

Strava can record a ruck as a Walk or Hike, but it has no rucking sport type and no pack-weight setting. If you record in a rucking app and send the ruck to Strava, Strava displays the calorie value the partner app sends.

Is RuckIt available on Android?

We found only an App Store listing for RuckIt, which lists iPhone and Apple Watch. We didn't find a Google Play version when we checked in November 2026.
